What does PHP stand for?

PHP is a recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, a popular general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited to web development.

What is the current stable version of PHP?

The current PHP version is 8.0.

From bench-marked testing done, PHP 8.0 is 31% faster than PHP 7.4 or nearly 3x the speed of PHP.

PHP 8.0 comes with numerous improvements, features, functionalities designed to help developers to write better code.

Having said that, PHP 8.1 has been released and the PHP dev team is already pushing out 8.2.

Please DO NOT use PHP 8.2 version in production. As of 2022.10.24, PHP 8.2.0 is still an early test version. This will change in the future though.

What is HardenedPHP and why does it matters for my server security?

Running unsupported version of PHP without security updates means that the website could be hacked at any time to send spam, attack other servers or infect it with malware.

So these old PHP version were backported and all known vulnerabilities fixed. By fixing all the known vulnerabilities (and continuing fixing them as new vulnerabilities get discovered ), HardenedPHP will continue receiving support as long as you need it.

Each of these was subjected to rigorous testing - including making sure that it does not break the functionality of major software packages, such as WordPress and Joomla.

What is WordPress best PHP version?

WordPress recommends PHP version 8.0 or greater. If you are still using older PHP that have reached official End Of Life without this hosting package that we offer, you are exposing your site to security vulnerabilities.

What version of PHP am I running?

The function phpinfo() displays the current information of PHP. The information might include installed PHP extensions, version, server information and environment (if compiled as a module), the PHP environment, paths, master and local values of configuration options, etc.

Unless you are using one of our high-end hosting packages or a VPS or dedicated server customer, chances are that phpinfo is disabled as part of the server PHP configuration.

To identify the PHP version your script or app is running as a shared hosting customer, login to cPanel , then scroll down to the Software section and click on MultiPHP Manager.

From here, you can see your domain's PHP version and even change them.

You can also use Server Information for cPanel once you login to cPanel located at cPanel >> Home >> Server Information.

The Server Information interface displays information about your account and the server that hosts your account.

Most of this information is only useful for advanced cPanel users. You can use this interface to determine your server's version of cPanel & WHM or specifics about Apache or PHP on your account.

What are the disadvantages of using unsupported PHP?

For click-to-install applications, (e.g WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc), if the application developer(s) has stopped supporting that PHP version, then it is NOT recommended to continue using it. Doing so exposes your application to severe vulnerabilities that may lie deeply buried within the code. Relying on this service which patches the programming language (PHP) but not the code written by the developers provides a false sense of security. You should consider this service a stop-gap measure while you work to update the application to use upstream-supported versions.
