What is cPanel license?
cPanel is a proprietary software that you can install on a Linux server to turn it either into a web server, a mail server or a DNS server, with an intuitive graphical user interface for easier management.
And as a software, its use or redistribution is governed by a contract between you ("the end user") and cPanel LLC.
The most significant effect of this form of licensing is that the end-user must accept the cPanel software license terms, agree and abide by these before you can use cPanel.
How many types of cPanel licenses are there?
There are 4 distinctive types of cPanel licenses and these determines the kind of features that will be available to you and your users on the server:
- Solo cPanel License
- Admin cPanel License
- Pro cPanel License
- Premier cPanel License
There is cPanel DNSONLY (which integrates with full-feature cPanel & WHM hosting servers and allows you to run dedicated name-servers) is free and does not require a cPanel license of any kind.
What type of cPanel license do I need?
The kind of cPanel license you will use largely depend on how many number of accounts, and in the case of Premier, the kind of server you are installing it on.
cPanel detects the number of accounts after the cPanel & WHM installation process and automatically scale it once the license has been upgraded to the next tier.
Premier cPanel License
This version of cPanel license can be installed on VPS/cloud instances (supported virtual environments) and also on dedicated servers.
For data centers, enterprise level businesses & web hosts. Limited to 100 accounts with additional accounts at $0.20 each.
PRO cPanel License
This is a cPanel license that is designed to be use in supported virtual environments.
Designed for growing mid-level businesses, large web agencies, hosting resellers that want to host less than 30 accounts.
Admin cPanel License
Ideal for SMBS, agencies, application developers, and web designers that need to host 5 cPanel accounts.
cPanel Solo License + VPS
Best for businesses, freelancers, developers or VPS customers that need to host one single account.
Is cPanel license free?
No!
cPanel licenses are not free and you should not accept a cPanel license that purports to be free forever unless you received it from a genuine source (your web host or a friend ) and have confirmed its validity.
Having said, cPanel do provide a free 14 days trial evaluation window whereby you try out every aspect of the cPanel license you want.
So while cPanel license is not free, it does give you the opportunity to experience it in full before signing up for the real thing.
How do I check my cPanel license?
When you have bought your cPanel license or want to check its status, you can do that using two methods.
via a browser
From your browser, visit https://verify.cpanel.net/app/verify
Once there, input the public IP address of your server and click the “Verify License “ button.
The license verification tool will display a server's cPanel & WHM license history and its validity.
via the Terminal
You can check whether your license is invalid or expired by running any of the following commands to obtain your license's IP address:
curl -w '\n' -s http://myip.cpanel.net/v1.0/curl -w '\n' -s http://myip.cpanel.net:2089/v1.0/
If your IP address is already licensed and you still experience problems, run the following script as the root user to verify your license & fix the invalid cPanel license error:
